FAQ

F.A.Q.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO COLLECT A 3D DATA SET USING EDT?

It depends on several parameters:

  • Software mode (computer controlled TEM) or hardware (using DigiStar precession hardware unit);
  • Beam steps in the software data collection mode;
  • Total tilt range of the goniometer;
  • Total number of goniometer tilts;
  • Single diffraction frame exposure time.

Typical examples are:

  1. Software mode, 0.1 ° beam tilt step, goniometer tilt range -70 ° / + 70 ° and tilt step of 2.8 °, exposure 0.5 sec –  ~ 1 h / 1 h 15 min  (~ 1500 frames).
  2. Software mode, 0.5 ° beam tilt step (only for unit cell determination), goniometer tilt range -40 ° / + 40 ° and tilt step of 2.8 °, exposure 0.5 sec – ~ 15/20  min   (~ 90 frames).
  3. Hardware precession mode, 1 ° precession angle, goniometer tilt range -70 ° / + 70 ° and tilt step or 1 °, exposure 0.5 sec – ~ 20/30  min   (141 frames).

HOW MUCH HARD DISK SPACE DOES IT TAKE FOR A SINGLE 3D DATASET?

It depends on the total number of frames recorded and on the size of a single diffraction frame. Considering the experimental conditions from the Question 1 and the frame size of 1024 * 1024 * 16 bits (~ 2.1 MB per frame including header size) the estimated storage required will be:

  1. ~ 3.1 GB;
  2. ~ 190 MB;
  3. ~ 300 MB.
